Pearly Pearls, Pa's Soliloquy
Pa, a luckless drunk and railroad laborer, shovels ballast at the train depot. Nearby sits Young Martin, Pa’s beloved 5-year-old son, as Ma, a good-time-gal, is off whoring around town.
As Pa works (and drinks) he shares some “pearls” of wisdom with his beloved son; lessons about life, Pa’s unfulfilled dreams of life on the rails, and a mysterious tale about The Conductor of That Hellbound Train carrying a load of passengers to “The Depot Down Yonder.”

Young Martin (now aged 15) escapes from the orphanage excited to chase adventure out on the rails.
Maybe he'll even meet The Conductor and That Hellbound Train full of “drunks and drifters, gamblers and grifters having a grand old time.”

Just as he decides to join the "gospel-shouters" of the Salvation Army, up roars THAT HELLBOUND TRAIN and the mythical Conductor with a tempting offer.

Armed with The Conductor’s stopwatch, imbued with the power to stop time and live forever at a moment of his choosing, Martin heads to the big city. There, he finds a good job and enters the rat race. After landing a promotion and a raise, Martin has enough money to rent a 5th floor walk-up, buy a used car, and for the first time, experiences dating.
Juggling his multiple dates, Martin sometimes confuses one girl with another. But with so much fun to be had, maybe this is the perfect moment to stop time and live forever!

After a series of one-night stands, Martin meets Lillian. On their first date, Martin realizes Lillian is his perfect match, someone he could spend eternity with.
Could this be the moment of perfect happiness he has been seeking?

Martin holds his newborn son for the first time. He is flooded with emotion as he reflects on his own childhood and the loss of his beloved father.
